Take Up Space is a national call-to-action to protect disabled artists’ right to work, powered by a new short film by Extraordinary Bodies.
The film features 15 disabled and non-disabled Extraordinary Bodies artists who each choreographed and filmed their own response to the direction: “Take Up Space.” Filmed performances are accompanied by the words and music of John Kelly and Ted Barnes and woven together by filmmaker Stephen Lake. Each moment in the film is a protest. Each artist states clearly: I am here. I create. I belong.
Why This Matters
‘Access to Work’ is the scheme that enables many D/deaf, disabled and neurodiverse people, artists to do their jobs. It funds support workers, BSL interpreters, drivers and essential access. Right now, long delays, reduced awards and increased rejections — is threatening decades of progress in disability inclusion across the arts. Because of this many disabled people are losing their independence or the help they require.

Your venue — or a venue you love — can screen or stream this film and take part in a growing national campaign. It’s free, flexible, and we want to share it widely. Which means anyone can take part in this call-to-action.

Extraordinary Bodies – Circus for Every Body
