In collaboration with the Desperate Men, Sequins and Sawdust was funded as part of the 2005 Creative Bristol artistic programme. Cirque Bijou set itself a brief to create an outdoor circus and street theatre show based in St Nicholas Market in the city centre of Bristol.

Cirque Bijou put together a team of local performers, musicians, writers and directors to create a unique of circus street theatre. The show was devised by Billy Alwen, Director of Cirque Bijou and written by Jacky Crosher. Musical composition and direction was by Shirley Pegna, and show was directed by Jacky Crosher and Jon Beedell of the Desperate Men. Additional fight direction was provided by Kate Waters.
The budget only allowed for a weeks creation and rehearsal time with the 19 artists, which included a live band, students from Circomedia’s BTEC course, and 6 professional circus and street theatre performers. The story revolved around two circus families, the Barnet’s and Capelli’s, where family feuds bubbled behind a façade of glitz and glamour.
A spectacular street circus free show performed to live music, with high rope walking, Chinese pole, acrobatics, aerial performance, and finale fight scene on the street. This one off spectacle was acclaimed by all..
‘Congratulations to you all for Sequins and Sawdust. A great show, some lovely performances, great weaving of the existing work and the new storyline, great use of the space, and could really see the development of confidence in some of the younger performers.’
