Cirque Bijou at the National Theatre's 'Watch This Space' 12/09/07

On the 1st September, Cirque Bijou presented 2 hour-long cabarets at Watch This Space, the National Theatre's free summer festival.  The two shows were produced in the same style as the two-day programme we presented earlier this year at the Bristol Harbour Festival, and used the same set and some of the same acts.  The lunchtime, family show included clowning, stunning aerial, beautiful acrobalance, pingpong juggling and some quality compering, while the evening show had a bit of a darker edge, some of the same acts, but added video projections, pyrotechnics and a bit more mayhem.

The shows were a great success, and the evening show in particular drew a huge and very enthusiastic crowd to the performance space on the South Bank. The festival's programmer, Caterina Loriggio, said 'The end-of-the-pier feel worked wonderfully.  A very joyful way to finish our season - thank you'.

Cirque Bijou and the National Theatre forged further collaborations by linking the Bristol City Council Harbour Festival Awards scheme (which was organised by Cirque Bijou), with the National Theatre's Fresh Faces 2007 programme. The scheme provided commissioning funds to develop circus and street performance through new show creation and by allowing emerging and established performers to develop and showcase their new work.  The partnership enabled recipients to perform in both London and Bristol at the EDF Energy Harbour Festival and at Watch This Space.
