£2,000 Street Theatre Commission

Frenetic Engineering…

Have worked together for 5 years creating contemporary and traditional circus shows and walkabout.  They are keen to develop their skills into the street theatre circuit, in addition to their current corporate and tented show work, by developing their existing 12 minute cabaret act into a 35 minute street show.   Combining the unusual skills that circus is loved for: knife throwing, acrobalance, object manipulation, fire, clowning and magic tricks and maximising audience participation. Once produced they would like to tour international as well as UK street circuits.  They will use their award to work with expert tutors and advisers and for prop and rehearsal space hire.

£1,825 Street Theatre Commission

The Cuddly Fluffkins…

Is a street or cabaret show based on children’s TV, but with adult overtones.  The show has already been developed to a stage where it has been successfully performed in Belfast and Brighton.  The proposal was put forth by dotComedy – an established street arts theatre company operating out of Bristol and London, who aim to create new work each year – the Fluffkins is this years project.  Although the show has already been performed, and has had a good reception from audiences, dotComedy are aware that there are many areas that could be in improved by a concerntrated period of rehearsal.  Their award would therefore, be used to fund 5 days rehearsal space and the employment of a director during this period to guide them.

£1,000 Continuing Professional Development for Circus Commission

Nathanial Rankin …

is currently enrolled on the One Year Diploma course at ‘Circomedia’.  He is a highly skilled magician, who has already won gold at some of the worlds biggest magic conventions despite being only 18.  Nathanial would like to create a new show that combines all his different skills including: magic, contemporary dance, mime, physical theatre and juggling all tightly choreographed to eclectic upbeat music.  The show would be designed with the street setting in mind, so that he could directly interact with the audience, using his background in slight of hand magic to be able to continually make objects appear, vanish, transform in size / colour and levitate before their eyes.   Nathanial will use his award to fund costume, sound design, props and dance lessons.

Avital Giles…

Would like to continue to develop her work in Russian Straps; a discipline that has, until recently been primarily performed by men due to the great strength and control required.  Trained with some of the worlds leading Straps teachers, she is currently using her skills to produce an artistic interpretation of a composition by her brother.  The 5-7 minute long act will explore the technical aspects of straps combined with dance and movement with the aim to portray skills such as extreme strength, grace, lightness and swinging.  She will use her award to fund a specially trained rigger, an intense period of training and the assistance of a choreographer.

£500 Youth Circus Commission

Jess Green and Jonathan Moss…

Are BTEC students at ‘Circomedia’.  They are currently devising a piece which is predominantly acro and dance with the possibility of integrating manipulation and aerial.  Their act is about a boy and girl and manipulation and control in relationships.  As they get to know each other one begins to take control of the other.  When one looses the other, they become lonely and realise their sense of control and loss of a relationship.  Jess is a contortionist which will help create the feeling of manipulation and add a wow factor; she is also an aerialist and acrobat.  Jonathan is an acrobat and juggler.  They will use their award towards costume costs, to gain assistance with directing and choreography and to also look at the possibility of employing a solo violinist.

Ned Rose and Ashton Launcherley…

Have just completed the two-year BTEC course at ‘Circomedia’.  They performed two solo pieces in their end of year show and would like to combine their juggling and clowning acts to produce a show that could be performed anywhere.  It would combine the performance aspect of the clowning with the technicality of the juggling.  They will use their award to purchase nine clubs and costumes, for publicity material and to employ a choreographer who has juggling experience to assist them.

£500 Youth Circus Commission

Andy Lawley…

Has just completed the two-year BTEC course at ‘Circomedia’.  He plans to convey / explore the beauty, strength and pain that he has experienced with a challenging and technically difficult solo trapeze routine, which would be performed slowly and with great control. He would like to create a tense and dramatic atmosphere for the audience through the work itself and assisted by the choice of music (‘Angel’ by Massive Attack).  Andy has performed the routine in front of the public once before with really good feedback, but he would now like to develop it into a professional routine with wide audience appeal.  He will use his award to employ a director / choreographer as well as an aerial teacher, to buy a costume and also a trapeze bar and rope for his future development.

Special Tutorial Commission

Sam Charlton and Reuben Hosler…

Are a young acro-balance duo who have been in full-time circus and physical theatre training at Circomedia for the last 3 years.  They would like to develop an act that they could showcase at a large festival.  Their act would use acro-balance to explore the relationship between two cavers, the trust and care, tension and fear that exist between the two men.  They hope to bring to bring to the audience the drama of a caving experience that has the potential to end in calamity, as the cavers struggle against adversity and their own limitations.  They are considering performing the act blindfolded to mimic the darkness of a cave if the caver’s lamps fail and to increase the tension of the piece.  Sam and Reuben will receive special private tuition with
performers Rod Laver and William Wilding.

Cirque Bijou Special Commission
